The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the Missouri automobile accident took place in the early evening at Highway 36 and Coyote Rd. The police reported that the two year old male child of Hiawatha was in a car that pulled from a private driveway and immediately struck. Both drivers were quickly transported to Hiawatha community hospital with injuries. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s website, the young child did not have a proper safety restraint. The report does not indicate whether he was improperly secured in a child seat or simply not in a carseat at all.
Early reports concerning this serious Missouri car crash do not indicate which driver was at fault for the accident. It is clear, however, that the driver of the car carrying the infant should have properly restrained the child. Missouri has enacted various seat belt laws for the protection of adults and children. Most cars manufactured after 2003 include a “latch” system. The latch system makes it possible for a parent to attach the infant car seat to a piece of metal in the car seat itself. The piece of metal is attached to the floor of the car so in essence, the system allows the infant seat to attach to the base the floor of the car for security. The below video illustrates how to properly install a carseat equipped with the latch system.
