A deadly school bus accident that took place in mid-August is being attributed to the bus driver’s inattention and close following distance. Two students were killed as a result of the deadly Missouri school bus accident on I-44. This particular interstate has faced similar accidents before as a result of traffic back-up. Injury attorney Lindsay Rakers won a case against MoDot for a fatal accident caused by poor design and traffic backup.

During the August 2010 accident, the two buses collided with a semi and a pickup truck. More than 50 people were injured in this horrific crash, which occurred as the buses were headed to a Six Flags amusement park. It seems that a pickup truck slammed into the 2007 Volvo semi, which was stopped for traffic that had backed up due to road construction. The bus driver reported that she moved quickly to the left to avoid another car and then was not able to stop in time and struck the pickup and semi. The police officers have indicated this bus driver was inattentive.

Unfortunately, another bus then struck the first bus most likely because the driver was following too closely as well. Both buses are owned and operated by Copeland Bus Service LLC of St. James and were leased to the St. James School District.

Sadly, this isn’t the only serious accident recently. Also this week, at least two people were injured in a five-vehicle crash on I-64 near New Baden. The cars had slowed due to traffic – just as with the school bus crash.
